JOHN GEARY
Hi
June 30 through August 6, 1999
Jessica Fredericks Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of drawings, video, and sculpture by JOHN GEARY. This will be the artist’s first show in New York. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in Los Angeles, most recently at Rosamund Felson Gallery and ACME gallery.
John Geary renders gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans in charcoal on paper without alteration or commentary. He revisits his childhood pursuit of drawing animals from various photo sources such as calendars and nature magazines. Through his choice of images and the exacting skill with which he draws, he creates a dual effect of intensity and detachment. In Hi, a 26 minute video inspired by the artist’s daily bike rides through Venice Beach, a hand held subjective camera records the artist’s tireless greetings. His monotonous, groaning “hi” with which he greets every person he passes is largely ignored. His attempt to forge a community has an accumulative effect of humor and isolation.
Jessica Fredericks Gallery is located at 504 West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. Summer hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 5pm. For further information and/or photographs please contact the gallery by telephone at (212) 633-6555 or fax at (212) 367-9502.
