MARNIE WEBER

THE TENDER DESERT

October 17 through November 21, 1998

Jessica Fredericks Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by MARNIE WEBER. Marnie Weber’s first solo show was at this gallery in January of 1997. Since then she has had solo exhibitions at Rosamund Felsen Gallery, Santa Monica, CA, and the Rooseum Center for Contemporary Art, Malmo, Sweden. Group exhibitions include L.A. On Paper 2 (Fantastic Matter of Fact) at Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna, Austria, Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles at Jason & Rhodes, London, England, Bring Your Own Walkman W139, Amsterdam, Holland, and The 21st Anniversary Benefit Art Auction at The New Museum of Contemporary Art, NYC. Recently her collage, Hamster Girl, was used as the cover for A Thousand Leaves, the new Sonic Youth Album.

Marnie Weber’s second solo show in New York combines sculpture, video, and collage to tell the story of the “Unlovables,” a group of female prisoners who are banished to a barren wasteland full of rodents, vermin, and other creatures who are nature’s unlovables. Here in this turbulent, possessed environment they grow into several new rodent species. These “Femme Rodentia” work to gain power and control over their land of exile.

Ms. Weber’s hand-made photomontages depict soft-porn cutouts in desert landscapes. Other elements include a gazing ball, puppets, and a video-taped puppet show. With a child-like recall, Weber uses erotic imagery without resorting to parody. Her tale is one of transformative power and community.

Jessica Fredericks Gallery is located at 504 West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm. For further information and/or photographs please contact the gallery by telephone at (212) 633-6555 or fax at (212) 367-9502.
