Danielle Roberts’s figures inhabit the late hours, moving through familiar places designed for the filling of need and the indulgence of want. Roberts approaches these settings with an underlying stillness, as if transience suspends time. In Echo on a Pane, Roberts’s figures are increasingly subordinated to the painting’s larger structures of light, atmosphere, and surface. Graphic contour and deep purple hues remain present, yet the paintings take on a vagabond luminosity that shifts from object to glow.

Glass becomes the central vehicle for this shift. Storefronts, aquariums, and mirrors foreground reflection, transparency, and glare, allowing several spatial registers to occupy the painting at once. A figure may appear behind a pane, on its surface, and within its reflection simultaneously. Roberts preserves the compressed drawing and heightened color that have long defined her work while allowing haze, refraction, and shifting depth to complicate their legibility. The image remains recognizable, but recognition is never the end point.

For Roberts, these layered spaces function as thresholds. Glass does not simply divide one world from another; it creates a moment in which a figure seems poised between states, briefly encountering another dimension of the same place. Artificial light catches on these surfaces and turns the ordinary world radiant. Reflection can make a person feel slightly altered. The threshold may be physical, emotional, or social, but crossing it offers no guarantee of change: errant movement may bring no relief, self-recognition may offer no assurance, and shared proximity may still leave the figure somehow apart.
