Danielle Roberts (b. 1991 Stockton, CA) is an artist from Gabriola Island, British Columbia. In her moody and atmospheric paintings, Roberts explores the various psychological states brought on by her generation’s societal instability. Drawing from personal experience, her paintings are grounded in an uncanny sense of place. Through the collision of light and shadow she creates a world where light is simultaneously magical and toxic, against a darkness that is both soothing and foreboding. Roberts currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Kristin Farr interviews Danielle Roberts.
The figures in Danielle Roberts’ paintings often look stuck and emotionless, like freshly turned walking dead constantly hovering over banal landscapes, yet they are inextricably linked to each other and in motion. Strangely suspended between connectivity and disconnection they speak directly to this omnipresent tension.
