Human Nature

November 30, 2017 through January 20, 2018

Opening reception: Thursday, November 30, 6-8PM

Fredericks & Freiser is pleased to present an exhibition of new photography by Lucas FogliaHuman Nature is a series of interconnected photographs about nature, people, government, and the science of our relationship to the wilderness.

When the news covers climate change, the subject is usually a specific political event or a natural disaster. The content is predictable: either a pristine wilderness that should be saved or a horrific catastrophe to which we need to respond. Human Nature focuses on the area in between those extremes; on how we live with nature at a time when strange weather has become the new normal.

Human Nature begins in cities and moves through forests, farms, deserts, ice fields, and oceans, towards wilderness. At a time when the average American spends 93% of their life indoors, Foglia photographed government programs that connect people to nature; neuroscientists measuring how spending time in the wild benefits us; and climate scientists measuring how human activity is changing the air. (Many of the scientists are now facing budget cuts and censorship by the Trump administration.)

A monograph published by Nazraeli Press will accompany the exhibition
