Sugar and Stress

Young Painting from New York

Justin Craun, Gregory Edwards, Selma Hafizovic

and Miyeon Lee

December 11 through February 5, 2005

Fredericks Freiser Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition of new painting by Justin Craun, Gregory Edwards, Selma Hafizovic and Miyeon Lee. The four artists are each exhibiting in their first major group exhibition.

Sugar and Stress presents painting that ranges widely in style and subject yet shares a common interest in integrating the eerie with the iconic.

Justin Craun paints from the inside out. His unnerving visions of modern day life depict both humor and dread with a frenzied clarity.

Gregory Edwards heralds a return to icon painting albeit a form less connected to defining a cultural landscape than to establishing an empirical vocabulary.

In her noir-ish pictures, Selma Hafizovic applies ultra-aggressive brushstrokes with a desert-like color palette to perfectly define her tragic figures. Her unrelenting fracturing of ground and figure unleashes both an emotional power and a modernist composition.

Miyeon Lee’s lyrical abstractions illuminate ephemeral impressions of everyday forms.

Fredericks Freiser Gallery is located at 504 West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm.
